Why Being the Witness Feels Like Being the Driver — But Isn’t
Have you ever stopped mid-action and thought…
“Wait — did I actually choose this?”
You wake up.
You brush your teeth.
You reply to a message.
You eat, think, speak, move.
It all feels normal.
It feels like you’re doing it.
But what if…
You’re not?
Automatic By Design
Let’s get real. Nearly everything we do as humans — from conversations to cravings, driving to dreaming — is a result of automatic biological processes.
You respond to a question… before you even realize you’ve processed it.
You get hungry… not by choice, but by chemistry.
You speak a sentence… without consciously assembling it word by word.
These aren’t deliberate acts.
They’re patterns.
Stimulus → Response
Habit → Reaction
Thought → Action
The Language Trap
We often believe we’re in control because of language.
It’s persuasive. It feels like a personal tool.
But ask yourself this:
Where did your language come from?
Did you choose your vocabulary?
Did you invent your grammar?
No.
You absorbed it — just like you absorbed beliefs, desires, fears, and routines.
Language arises from thought.
And thought?
That just… appears.
The Thought Illusion
Try to catch your next thought.
Go on — choose it.
…
You can’t.
By the time you’re aware of it, it’s already there.
You don’t think — thinking happens.
If you don’t control your thoughts,
then you don’t control your preferences,
your speech,
your identity,
or your reactions.
They’re all downstream of something you never authored.
So What Feels Like “You”?
There’s a presence.
A witness.
An awareness watching it all unfold.
It doesn’t speak.
It doesn’t react.
It just knows.
This is what we often mistake for the “I” in charge.
But that’s the illusion.
Awareness is
not the driver.
It’s the
passenger.
Watching the car steer itself.
You are not doing life.
Life is doing itself.
And you’re watching the show from the front row — thinking you’re directing it.
Consciousness as Proximity
Think of it like this:
You’re inside the system.
You’re aware of the system.
But you are not controlling it.
You’re so close to the unfolding that it feels like you’re initiating it.
But you’re not the voice in your head.
You’re the space it echoes within.
So Who Are You Really?
Not the thinker.
Not the doer.
Not the chooser.
You are the field.
The open awareness that witnesses all of it.
Not separate from the unfolding — but not in control of it either.
And when this is seen clearly,
there’s no fear in losing control —
because you realize…
You never had it.
And that’s freedom.
Your Turn: Watch the Machine
For the next hour, just observe yourself.
Every action
Every decision
Every impulse
Every word you speak
Notice:
Did you choose any of it?
Or is it simply happening,
with you — the awareness — watching it unfold?
You might find that you’ve been watching the movie of your life,
thinking you were the actor…
When in truth —
you were the screen all along.
